My favorite characters of season 1 of LOST.

James "Sawyer" Ford aka James LaFleur
I was going to title Sawyer's write up as "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." But I figure, it's been used before and you guys already get the idea. I must at least say that I have loved watching Sawyer's transformation from a selfish loner to a responsible, contributing member of the community. I knew he could do it in season one when he had kept Sayid's fire going, even after Sayid had tortured him. He went from Sawyer to James, from a person who thought of himself as someone who didn't deserve love, to someone devastated when the love he finally found slipped away to her death. I've shared my concerns for Sawyer this season and am worried TPTB won't honor Juliet's death and send Sawyer back to Kate. Only time will tell, and I have 30 more days I am refusing to worry about it.

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes
Some argue my #2 pick is comic relief and that is basically his only function. I argue that Jorge Garcia is a fine actor, doing comedy well but also having a firm grip on drama too. In the episode, "Dave", when Hurley is talking to Dr. Brooks about his weight problem, feeling responsible for the deck coming down and killing those people; it gets to me every time. Plus, I love the entire Reyes family. If anyone deserves a spinoff after LOST is over, it is the Reyes. Need to add a shout out here to Carmen Reyes. She is a character like Doc Arzt, line for line, some brilliantly, funny stuff.

Sayid Jarrah
Whenever I watch LOST with my sister, she always reminds me my #3 pick, Sayid, was right about "Henry Gale". He has had an interesting dynamic in his relationship to Ben, especially through season 4 and 5. Sayid felt and showed remorse for torturing Sawyer and he killed one of the Others with his legs, how impressive was that? I am worried about Sayid for season 6. Being gut shot and lying in the jungle for hours is almost as bad as being pulled to the bottom of a hole and hitting an atomic bomb with a rock.

John Locke
How cool is it for a character to be in a coffin at the end of three different seasons and we still know he is a main character and will be featured prominently in the next season? (Guess I could qualify season 3, cause we didn't really know then, but you get what I mean.) Locke probably deserves to be higher than #4 on my list, but I never got into his character like many of his loyal, devoted fans. It may have something to do with the horrible, evil stepfather he played in the 1987 movie, The Stepfather, which totally creeped me out and I can still remember quite vividly; but I digress.
Danielle Rousseau
Danielle makes #5 on my list of favorites from season 1. It could be argued that Danielle is a minor character, but I feel her story and appearances qualify her as a major one. Of all the characters on LOST, I feel Danielle's is the most tragic. Coming to the Island at such a young age, losing her husband, and baby, and just having to survive day by day is such a sad story. The grim ending of her life wraps up her bleak story in a heartbreaking but fitting way. She was also introduced as a mysterious character, and I think her story unfolded through the seasons in a sad but interesting way.

Rose Nadler
Again it could be argued that my #6 choice is a minor character, but she has had her own centric, shared with Bernard, of course. If Locke is the man of faith on LOST, Rose would be the woman of faith on LOST. TPTB have a great character they've established with Rose, but I guess older average looking women don't hold a tv audiences attention or do especially well in the ratings. I loved when Charlie turned to her to pray with him and Rose and Bernard's reunion always makes me teary.

Kate Austen
Kate makes my #7 pick as favorite character of season 1. She totally had me at "No girl's exactly like me." And then they surprised me with her being the marshall's prisoner. I loved her up to season 4. After that it has been a downhill slide. She was so independent and impressive as a girl on the run taking care of herself and not stopping for anything. Her indecision between Jack and Sawyer was entertaining and understandable up to season 3, episode 6; but after that it descended into a silly soap opera, designed to torture us shippers. TPTB succeeded in torturing shippers, they also succeeded in ruining Kate's character. I want to like Kate, I really do. But with the way TPTB have made her so unperceptive as to why and how she behaves is ridiculous and tiring. I don't hate Kate, just am very weary of her and her odd behavior.

Shannon Rutherford and Boone Carlyle
Honorable mention goes to the stepsiblings Shannon and Boone. Boone was a great student to Locke's teaching. And Shannon was a nice contrast to all the useful and kind characters we had met. I loved their quirky relationship and I think they each had a lot more potential than we ever got to see. Plus Ian makes a lovely vampire on The Vampire Diaries, but I digress.
